We are honored to announce that living legend, Dr. Opal Lee will be our graduation keynote speaker at the TMCA Graduation Ceremony in January 2024. Dr. Lee is 97 years old and known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” She worked tirelessly to create this Federal holiday recognizing that America promises freedom, liberty, and justice for all. The holiday marks the date when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free. Opal Lee was born October 7, 1926, in Marshall, Texas. Her mother moved to Fort Worth when she was ten years old. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953 from Wiley College (now Wiley University) and returned to Fort Worth to teach at Amanda McCoy Elementary School for 15 years where she was regarded as one of the best educators in her field. At night she worked at Convair (now Lockheed Martin) to support her children. She later obtained her Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) and served as Home/School Counselor for Fort Worth Independent School District until her retirement in 1977. Opal Lee received an honorary doctorate from the UNT in May 2023. Dr. Lee will be addressing the importance of continuing education and learning to serve your citizens well.
